No To Big Tech Artemis Bear Presentation at Watershed in Bristol

The brilliant No To Big Tech contributor Artemis Bear (external link)  gave a brilliant talk to the lovely people at Watershed in Bristol, as part of their Friday Lunchtime Talks series, hosted by Pervasive Media Studio.

Artemis spoke about what the threats of Big Tech are, and shared some really nice alternatives we could (and should!) be using, if we can.

The Pervasive Media Studio is a partnership between the Watershed, University of the West of England and University of Bristol. The lunchtime talks are partly supported by MyWorld, a project led by the University of Bristol to support creative industries in the region. Watershed is supported by Arts Council England.

Artemis Bear is a start-up founder, researcher, network weaver, community organiser, facilitator, and culture change strategist, with a focus on deschooling and decolonising for regenerative futures. They're the founder of innovative education project The Garden, a researcher in Alternative Futures for Onion Collective, governance officer for radical video game co-op Circle-A Studios, and an active co-creator within The Bristol Commons. They're also part of a new initiative called No To Big Tech, which is aiming to support people to divest from big tech by promoting alternatives.Big tech has demonstrated itself to be a threat to our privacy, human rights, mental health, and democracy. With governments appearing unwilling to create the conditions for transparency and accountability, we must build a popular resistance and the good news is that there are many ethical, privacy-first alternatives that we could be supporting instead. This talk will cover why we need to take action and offer alternative options for cloud storage, collaborative documents, email, media streaming, social media and hardware.Want to support what we do at Watershed? Disobey ~ No To Big Tech | Extinction Rebellion UK

Matt Tutt (external link) was very kindly invited on to XR's monthly series of talks entitled Disobey, where the theme was of course Big Tech. This series aims to highlight ways in which Non-Violent Direct Action (NVDA) can be used to push back against Big Tech and other threats facing our society. Matt was joined by the amazing Rania Youssef, who represents another anti Big Tech movement called Tribe-X (external link), based in France.

Host your own No To Big Tech / DeGoogle webinar or event

If this movement is going to work, it will need as many people as possible to host webinars.

This allows us to reach a wider audience, and (importantly!) ensures this is an inclusive movement which caters for all time zones.

You don't need anything special to host a webinar - we can provide the basic training that you need to host one, and to help you to setup the hosting environment (we are using Jitsi Meet but there are other non Big-Tech options!).

You can choose any topics to talk about too - for example:

      • Finding alternatives to Gmail
      • Finding alternatives to Google Drive
      • Finding alternatives to Google Photos
      • Finding alternatives to Android
      • Moving away from Windows
      • How to de-Google your Android phone

As long as it is related to the fight against Big Tech then it will be a relevant webinar and we will help to support and promote it!

If you would like to host a webinar with our support please apply as a contributor.
